Church House Inn, a feast of ambience and conviviality

From the moment you enter you feel the friendly atmosphere.  It might be the winter log fires beside the big sofa.  It could be the anticipation of good food.  Probably it’s the lively welcome from the proprietors.  The Inn’s time-honoured background has for centuries invited conversation and conviviality.

The quaintness dates from 1329 when stonemasons built it to house them while they built St Mary’s church alongside.  They needed comfortable accommodation, good food and fine ales.  Today, Church House Inn reputation for good food, selected wines and fine local ales attracts visitors from all over the world.  Walkers on the famous 2 Moors Way recognise Church House Inn as a routine watering hole and regular stop for them.

Best pubs and landscapes are in Devon – independent survey by Country Life magazine

Devon, the third biggest county was voted best for local food, fireside pubs, heritage and rolling landscape, reports the Country Life survey.  “You can take Devon warm, sitting around a log fire, drinking local ale, or take it wild as Sherlock Holmes discovered” says the report.

There is something for everyone the Country Life report says.  Well known radio and television broadcaster Judi Spiers says “there are green fields and scenery full of rustic charm and chocolate box thatched cottages.  If you are a hiker, a weekend walker, or a serious yomper there is Dartmoor.   If you are into History there are pre-historic burial grounds, old copper mines and Sir Francis Drake’s bowling green.”

Dartmoor National Park is world famous for its rugged and stunning scenery.  The wild open spaces, the woodland valleys and rivers or the rocky outcrops, and tors, bring endless enjoyment to all our visitors.
